EYE AND SKIN DAMAGE

The welding arc produces intense ultraviolet and infrared radiation. This can cause “arc eye” (photokeratitis), which damages the cornea in just seconds, and severe skin burns similar to extreme sunburns in as little as 15 minutes. Long-term exposure increases the risk of cataracts and skin cancer.

PROTECTIVE CLOTHING

Always wear a welding helmet with a properly tinted lens shade, long-sleeve shirts, and protective gloves.

TOXIC FUMES AND BY-PRODUCTS

TIG welding generates ozone, nanoparticles, and off-gasses from molten metals (like aluminum, tungsten, and silicon). These particles can penetrate deep into the respiratory system and bloodstream. Short-term effects include chest pain and shortness of breath, while long-term exposure is linked to lung damage, nervous system issues, and cancer.

FACE MASKS/VENTILATION

Weld only in well-ventilated areas, use a local exhaust ventilation system (like a hood and ducted fan), and utilize proper welding techniques to minimize sparks and fumes.

ASPHYXIATION FROM SHIELDING GAS

The process uses inert shielding gases like argon and carbon dioxide. Because these gases are odorless and colorless, they can easily displace oxygen in confined spaces. If the oxygen level drops below 19.5%, it can lead to dizziness, fainting, or even death by asphyxiation.

OXYGEN MONITORS OR SCBA

Use personal oxygen safety monitors, low oxygen safety alarms, or combined CO2/oxygen alarms to detect dangerous gas levels. Supplemental breathing air may be necessary in extreme, enclosed conditions.

ELECTROCUTION

While TIG welding uses low voltages, making electrocution rare, the combination of electricity and moisture can cause electric shocks.

TAKE PROPER PRECAUTIONS

Never weld in the rain, in high humidity, or while excessively sweating. Keep all skin, boots, and gloves completely dry.
